The sea is rising on our coastal economies. From South Florida to global shorelines, coastal conditions are changing with new weather and flooding patterns combined with projected sea level rise.

The NSU Rising Seas Institute is charting the way forward. We foster interdisciplinary collaboration to catalyze innovative solutions across fields—including business and finance, real estate, city planning, engineering, coastal resilience, public health, environmental law, and policy. Our mission is to advance intelligent adaptation strategies for sea level rise, empowering coastal communities to understand, plan, adapt, and thrive.

Whether your primary interest in adapting to rising sea level is in humanitarian issues; the challenge to plan, design, and build communities of tomorrow; preserving personal assets; or doing the best we can for future generations, we are now at the moment in human history when we must start moving to higher ground—metaphorically for most, and for many people on the coast, literally.

From Boosting Coastlines to Global Exploration

Rising seas affect everything from shoreline infrastructure to inland economies—and these complex challenges require intelligent, interdisciplinary solutions. We lead world-class research to propel real-world impact, from pioneering public expeditions of global ice sheets to collaborative planning across sectors and industries.

Greenland Expeditions

In this immersive, ground-zero experience of Greenland’s extreme glacial melt, you’ll walk on million-year-old glaciers, learn from scientific experts, and witness the realities of sea level rise through up-close observations. These transformative educational experiences reveal how rapid changes in the Arctic are impacting global coastlines, shedding new light on the urgent need for climate readiness and inspiring intelligent adaptation.

Designed for business and educational leaders, media reporters, scientists, ocean stewards, and anyone interested in our changing world, this VIP adventure is led by John Englander, a leading voice on sea level rise.

Remembering a Visionary

Robert “Bob” Corell (1934–2025), a senior scientist and Greenland Expedition founder at the Rising Seas Institute, was a visionary leader, globally respected scientist, and co-founder of the Rising Seas Institute. His deep expertise in climate research and polar regions inspired the community and advanced our understanding of rising sea levels. A program leader and scientific adviser to the eight-nation Arctic Council on climate change, he held senior advisory roles on climate policy under both Republican and Democratic administrations. He was among the scientists recognized for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
